Inexpensive replacement for Nikon ME-1 microphone windscreen

The Nikon ME-1 microphone is a common microphone used with Nikon DSLR cameras.

I use one, with it's accompanying foam windscreen, on a Nikon D4s while shooting video for ydr.com. I keep the microphone on the camera all the time so that it's always ready to capture video.

Because of the constant wear and tear, the foam windscreen loosens up and then easily falls off without a rubber band retainer.

I've tried for years to find an inexpensive replacement.

I have used some that didn't quite fit, or fit over the decomposing remains of the original windscreen. One furry aftermarket replacement muffled the sound.

My online search began again after my most recent fix started falling apart. I searched the comments/questions of every replacement cover that looked close in size on Amazon. I posted in comments asking sellers if this microphone windscreen had a three-quarter-inch diameter hole.

And then I found it, The Auray WHF-2040 Foam Windscreen For 3/4" Diameter Microphones on Amazon for $8.57.

The Auray cover fits perfectly and the sound properties match the original. You can notch out the foam for the wire. That brings the windscreen back further on the microphone.

I use a rubber band at the base, beyond the holes in the microphone, to keep the foam in place as it ages and loosens up.
