Sony has announced the ECM-G1 Shotgun Microphone. This shouldn’t be confused with the recently announced Sony ECM-B10 microphone.

The ECM-G1 Shotgun Microphone is being touted as an affordable, versatile, entry-level mic designed for vloggers and other video creators. It connects to Sony alpha and some digital cinema cameras via the MI (Multi Interface) shoe. This allows you to have a cableless microphone set up.

The ECM-G1 is lightweight and compact, and it tips the scales at 1.2 oz / 34g and it has physical dimensions of 1″ x 2″ x 1.9″ (W x H x D: 2.8cm x 5cm x 4.8cm. Because of its design and small size, users can shoot with the camera viewfinder without the microphone hitting their head.

The ECM-G1 has a super-cardioid pickup pattern and a large-diameter (14.6 mm) microphone capsule that is claimed to provide clear sound while suppressing noise.

The mic includes a windscreen to reduce wind noise when shooting outdoors and it has an optimized structure to suppress frequency vibration noise with anti-vibration dampers.

The new ECM-G1 also comes with a microphone jack and recording cable which makes it compatible with a wide range of devices that feature a 3.5mm mic jack.

The Sony ECM-G1 will be available in August 2022 for $149.99 USD.

While this is an entry-level microphone it would probably work well if you want to put a small-sized microphone on say an FX3 or FX6 when mounted on a gimbal.
