Sony’s new ECM-G1 shotgun mic promises to give users ambient sound suppression and clear frontal sound collection at a vlogger-friendly price.

Noise annoys as ever, so, coming to a Sony dealer near you in August, the company’s new ECM-G1 boasts a large-diameter (approx. 14.6 mm) microphone capsule, to help provide clear sound collection whilst suppressing noise.

The mic includes a wind screen to reduce wind noise when shooting outdoors and has an optimised structure to suppress frequency vibration noise with anti-vibration dampers. When connected to a Sony camera equipped with the Multi Interface (MI) shoe, Sony reckons that the cableless design even eliminates cable-transmitted vibration noise, as well as providing all the handy usual benefits of the MI system such as power.

As is the way with these things, clear sound collection from in front of the camera is emphasized with super-cardioid, while ambient sound is suppressed to ensure only desired audio is captured. This works even when shooting indoors, Sony saying that the ECM-G1 is highly effective at reducing echo pickup from walls and voice reverberation — all resulting in clear conversation sound collection.

The ECM-G1 is impressively light, weighing just 34g, and also pretty compact at 28mm x 50.8mm x 48.5mm.

Estimated retail price is £145/€170 and the unit will ship with a 3.5mm TRS cable.
